Built by Carter Burwell, grandson of Robert "King" Carter. Hosted social gatherings for students from College of William Mary. George Washington is supposed to have proposed to Betsy Cary (younger sister of Sally Fairfax) in the drawing room. Thomas Jefferson is also supposed to have proposed to Rebecca Burwell in the same room. Both were rejected. The room is remembered as "The Refusal Room".
